QIECC

History

Indigenous Education Consultative Bodies (IECB's), or as they were previously known, Aboriginal Education Consultative Groups (AECG's), were established in each state and territory to increase and improve participation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in education decision making as expressed by the goals and priorities outlined in the:
  • National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education Policy (AEP) 1989; and
  • National Strategy for the education of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples (1996 - 2002)

Queensland, however, has maintained an independent Indigenous consultative body since 1976, beginning with the Queensland Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Consultative Committee (QATSICC). QATSICC reported to the Director-General of the Queensland Department of Education at that time. QATSICC later became the Queensland Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education Consultative Committee (QATSIECC).

Following the 1996 review, Listening to the Ground, Queensland established the Ministerial Advisory Council on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education (MACATSIE) for the 1997-1999 term. The State Minister for Education initiated consultations with a number of key stakeholders regarding a proposal to establish a renewed IECB, thereby establishing the Queensland Indigenous Education Consultative Body (QIECB), for the 2000-2004 term.

The QIECB was reconstituted in 2000 to provide independent expert advice to the Queensland Minister for Education and Minister for the Arts and the Commonwealth Minister for Education, Science and Training on education and training issues for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Its term expired in December 2004.

The Queensland Indigenous Education Consultative Committee (QIECC) was convened in February 2006 and will be in place for the current quadrennium, ending in December 2008.
