2008 QIECC Annual Forum - Preliminary Information

"Closing the Gap: From National Address to Education Success"
15-16 October 2008, Pacific International Hotel, Cairns

Through this Forum, QIECC is seeking to engage wide expertise to contribute ideas and successful practices towards the Governments' commitment to "Closing the Gap" in Indigenous educational achievements.

Forum delegates will have the opportunity to directly contribute to the advice QIECC provides to Government on "Closing the Gap" in Indigenous educational achievements.

Tuesday 14 October: Pre Forum Meet and Greet - local entertainment by 'One Drop' duo and artist display by Joey Laifoo

Wednesday 15 October: Forum Dinner - with time for networking and more local entertainment by 'Mata Bala's'


DELEGATE REGISTRATIONS CLOSED

The QIECC invites Indigenous community members, parents, families, young people, practitioners, researchers, organisations, private industry, government and non-government agencies to attend the Annual Forum. The knowledge and ideas of Indigenous education and training workers, community members, families, young people and parents is invaluable in formulating well balanced advice. We encourage education and training providers to support your Indigenous workers and/or Indigenous community members to attend this unique opportunity. We welcome both Indigenous and non-Indigenous participation at the Forum.

Registration for the Forum and associated activities is free.

To participate in the Forum you must submit a registration form. Registrations close Monday 6 October 2008.

QIECC is offering a limited amount of Air Travel and Accommodation Assistance up to the value of $500 for each applicant. More information can be found in the Delegate Registration Form. Applications closed Wednesday 17 September 2008 but QIECC may consider late applications.

Travel and accommodation options for Cairns Cairns and Tropical North Queensland Visitor Information Centre

The Pacific International Hotel Cairns is the host venue for the 2008 QIECC Annual Forum. Special accommodation rates have been negotiated for Forum Delegates. Please see the Delegate Registration Information form to view the details. All accommodation must be booked directly through the hotels, quoting the code as noted in the Delegate Registration Information form.

CALL FOR ABSTRACTS CLOSED

The Australian Government and state and territory governments have agreed to specific Indigenous education and employment targets for "Closing the Gap" between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians.

THEMES

The QIECC believes it takes the whole community to achieve successful lifelong learning for Indigenous Australians.
Four themes have been identified for the Forum as factors required to be successful in "Closing the Gap" in Indigenous educational achievements.

Involve - Involvement of parents, families and community

Value - Valuing the Indigenous education and training workforce

Engage - Engagement in life long learning

Understand - Understanding the complete Australian history
