The 2008 Queensland Indigenous Education Consultative Committee's (QIECC) Annual Forum not only built on the success of last year's Inaugural Forum - it surpassed it.
QIECC Chair Ms Gina Archer said "This was a very well organised and run Forum. Over 180 delegates participated and presentations that showcased successful programs were educational and informative. Discussions were lively and delegates had the opportunity to network throughout."
The Opening on Wednesday, 15 October included a unique ‘Welcome To Country' conducted by Seith Fourmile, utilising a DVD explaining the formation of the country and surrounding hinterlands on which Cairns now stands.
The overall theme of the Forum was ‘Closing the Gap: From National Address to Education Success'. The four key topics of 'Involve', 'Value', 'Engage' and 'Understand' were keenly discussed by delegates in order to contribute their ideas and points to the advice which will be provided to both the Australian Government and Queensland Government.
An opening performance by the Djarragun College dancers on day two was received with enthusiastic applause.
The Forum invoked passion and enthusiasm in regards to the education of Indigenous students, demonstrating many Queenslanders are working towards improvements and indicating to all that the theme, ‘Closing the Gap', was the right choice.
The overwhelming response to the QIECC Forum highlights the need for the Forum to continue and become a regular fixture in the Queensland Indigenous education calendar.
